Today marks the first day of school for many students. As with New Years, many students use the beginning of a new school year to set goals and try to do better. Whether it’s getting better grades, changing up your style or losing weight, the goals for the new school year differ for each person.
One goal that many students should focus on is their health. A large part of the nation is struggling with obesity, and that includes students too! Whether you are a college student fighting the “freshman 15” or a preteen struggling with puberty, exercise is a great way to boost your health and maintain your weight.
Many schools offer or even require physical education classes, and these are great ways to get some fitness in. After all, if you’re going to exercise, you might as well get school credit for it! Up until High School, there are usually only extracurricular sports and general PE classes offered. These are great for fitness though, because each one offers different benefits and works different muscles.
In a college setting though, there is a lot more variety to choose from in fitness classes. These can range from weight training to general fitness to water aerobics to running in the gym or outdoors. This makes it easier for you to find the perfect fitness program for you! Because you are getting credit for exercising, there is more motivation for you to be there. This helps you to exercise more often!
Eating nutritious food is also important to having good health. So put down that Ramen, and next time you go to the store opt for whole grains, low fat meats and dairy, and emphasize fruits and vegetables.
What are some ways you or someone you know has made healthy changes using school programs? As always, we would love for you to share your stories in the comments section below. Thanks!
